What Is...

This section lists brief explanations of the terms used
and basic information relating to the World of Glass Art.

Fusing?
Fusing is the melting of two pieces of compatible glass with each other forming a single glass piece/object.

Lampworking?
Lampworking is a term used to describe glass bead-making over a torch, often also called flameworking as you're melting glass over a (close to) 1000 degC flame.

Annealing? ...how?...and is it necessary?
Annealing is a procedure that is necessary to strengthen your glass fused piece or lampworked beads. It will reduce the chances of your glass pieces from spontaneously shattering on you.
Annealing is carried out in a proper Kiln taking glass pieces through a controlled firing process with set holding temperatures to allow the molecules within the glass to re-align themselves, creating a stronger bond.
Look up Link to Kiln Owners to locate Annealing services near you.

Compatible Glass?
When melting two separate pieces of glass together, glass of similar characteristics will behave similarly in heating and cooling down thus reducing the chances of stresses and cracking/breaking between the two pieces of glass.

Thermal Shock?
Thermal shock is a term used to describe how a glass piece will crack/break as it is heating up or cooling down in temperature. Introducing extreme temperatures to glass will cause it to shatter.

ThinFire Paper?
ThinFire Paper is used to separate the glass from the kiln shelf. It is used to stop the glass from melting and sticking to the surface of the kiln shelf.

Glastac?
Glastac is a water base glue used to hold pieces of glass together prior to fusing. When left for a few hours or overnight, pieces of glass will hold together becoming one piece hence reducing the chances of your design moving prior to fusing.
